The National Youth Project Using
Minibikes (NYPUM) is a private, non-profit program which operates after
school and summers in communities across the nation. Using a minibike as
a motivational tool, NYPUM helps youth ages 10-15 overcome behavioral
problems and develop self-esteem and a sense of belonging. American
Honda donates all minibikes used in the program, and businesses and
organizations in each community help support their local NYPUM program.
TCHSA's NYPUM program, now in its
23rd year, serves as a model and is one of 40 operating throughout the
nation. Since its inception, approximately 3,500 Tioga County youth have
completed the program.
How Does it Work?
NYPUM counselors, parents and
community professionals develop a contract with each NYPUM participant.
The contract specifies behaviors which are causing trouble, either at
home or in school. Youth who work to change these behaviors earn the
privilege of riding a minibike at the program site.
Working with specially-trained youth
counselors, participants complete a 21-part lesson plan which teaches
safe riding skills, responsibility to other riders and the mechanics of
a minibike. NYPUM participants are required to attend school and keep up
their grade average to maintain their riding privileges.
What About Safety
Issues?
NYPUM counselors must
complete a special, eight-day course developed by the national
Motorcycle Safety Foundation to receive certification as a NYPUM
trainer. A two-day, re-certification course is required every three
years.
What's the Success
Rate?
NYPUM studies show that up to 90
percent of the children who participate in the program do not continue
delinquent or dysfunctional behavior.
Who Can Participate?
While NYPUM is geared to help at-risk
youth, the Tioga County NYPUM program is open to any Tioga County youth
between the ages of 10 and 15.
